Is your Wii Fit collecting dust somewhere because the exercise program just is not what you had hoped? Mine was until I discovered what I am about to tell you.

The Wii Fit was fun for awhile learning the exercises, watching your balance, seeing where you ranked, and finally noting the time you spent exercising. Then you realize it takes an hour to get 30 minutes of exercise. Most of the time you are just standing there waiting for the Wii to “get on with it already”!

The first thing I did to try to make the exercises more efficient was to only do the advanced 10 minute ones; like running, the advanced boxing, the 10 minute free step, etc.(By the way the free step works well if you slowly raise it up. I put plywood under it, but the pieces had to be large enough to keep the Balance Board from slipping off, but small enough that you won’t step on them.)

After doing this for awhile, I lost interest and my Balance Board starting collecting dust. Sound familiar!

Then I had an idea. If you use the pause button at the end of the exercise before the trainer has a chance to talk, you have three choices. You can either continue, retry, or quit. In case you don’t know the pause button is the + button to the right of the home button on your remote. The home button is the one in the middle with the little house on it.

1. If you choose continue, the trainer finishes talking and Wii does all the balance, score, and timing.

2. If you choose retry, the exercise starts over with only a brief confirmation with the green ball on the screen. And there is no small talk from the trainer, you just get right to the exercise.

3. If you choose quit, Wii takes you back to the screen where you can choose your next exercise. So you can just pick the next exercise on your list, but the first time you do it you have to listen to the trainer’s small talk. However ‘quit’ does not go all the way back to the training screen with the piggy bank timer and all the categories, yoga, aerobics, etc.

Using this method I was able to do 7 yoga posses several times each, the aerobic advanced step, and a balance game in under 30 minutes. This was my yoga day, tomorrow will be aerobics!

The disadvantage is that the Wii does not measure your actual exercise time, give you a score, or show you your balance, but my goal now is just to get a workout that fits me and doesn’t take all day!

And guess what, it’s enjoyable again!!!

The Nintendo Wii revolution continues with the pending launch of the new Wii Fitness products as announced at this year’s E3 2007. This brand new product from Nintendo, called Wii Fit, will take the form of a balance board controller accessory and a bundled exercise game.

The Wii Fitness products take off from where Wii Sports started by introducing active-play games that are not only great fun to play, but also great exercise as well. In fact the Wii balance board brings exercise and fitness for the entire body. The software and balance board is aimed at a large array of exercise based fun, including dancing, aerobics, balancing, and of course games.

The Wii Fit software uses the balance board to compile data in order to plan your fitness progress over a period of time. The software’s fitness measurement system can collect data about an individual in order to keep track of their fitness goals. The fitness readings are presented in the way of a graph that measures your body mass index (BMI) and will adapt your Mii character accordingly. The Mii character is a animated character that represents an individual player’s physique, so it’s important to enter your stats correctly for accurate progress analysis.

Once your personal settings are calibrated, you can then start to have fun playing the fitness mini games. One of the most fun Wii Fitness games looks like the football heading game, in which the players are required to move their heads in the right direction to head the oncoming balls. Other mini games include doing hula hoops by shaking your hips and a marble madness style game where your balance is key to winning. The more serious fitness style games include doing strenuous balancing exercises, press-ups, and yoga.

The release date has still not been announced and neither has the price, but the price is rumoured to be in the range of $49 to $69. What the new Nintendo Wii Fitness products will hopefully bring is a whole new line up of interactive games. Who knows yet, but I can already imagine the likes of skiing, snowboarding, skate boarding, and so on. Maybe these future games could be used in conjunction with the Wii remote for a complete interactive experience?

Whatever happens next, the Nintendo Wii and the new Wii Fitness range are taking the console to a new level that the likes of Microsoft and Sony will find tough to match, especially at Nintendo’s affordable prices.

More and more the Nintendo Wii is really starting to look like the perfect marketing storm. The system has surpassed both PS3 and X-Box in sales, and supply isn’t even close to meeting demand (units don’t even sit on shelves, shipments simply fly in and out of stores every couple weeks). With its reasonable price (at least $100 lower than the aforementioned systems) and unique spin on video-game play, the Wii has become a downright phenomenon. But perhaps just as key to the system’s success is the way the Wii has managed to tap into the fitness market.

Nintendo will further blur the line between gaming and fitness on May 19th, when the company releases the Wii Fit bundle in the United States. The Wii Fit bundle includes a wireless balance board and over 40 exercise routines. The board can support a person weighing up to 660 pounds, and it uses a person’s weight and balance to compute body mass index (BMI) – which determines if a person is within weight range, underweight or overweight. The software also tracks a user’s progress over time, so they can see improvements to BMI. Users are encouraged to measure their BMI daily, and the creators of the Fit bundle claim the balance board is one of the most accurate scales you can buy. The Wii Fit also can tell if a person’s weight distribution is uneven and provide tips on improving balance.

The Wii Fit’s hefty $89.99 price tag is at least justified by the wide range of exercises it includes. The exercises are grouped under four different training modes: strength training, yoga, aerobics and balance games. The strength training category offers a series of extensions, lifts (arm and leg), squats, twists, lunges, planks and more. Meanwhile, the yoga category coaches users through a variety of different positions and breathing exercises, and aerobics allows players to do stepping, rhythm boxing and even hula-hoop challenges. Finally the balance games include heading a soccer ball, walking a tight rope, doing ski jumps and more. When a person starts an exercise, a trainer (designed by the user) appears on screen. Throughout each exercise, the trainer provides the user with personalized feedback. All of the games and exercises utilize the balance board in some way, so the system (and your trainer) can tell exactly what you are doing and how you are doing it.

Given that the Wii has already become a surprise hit among non-traditional gamers who use it as a fitness tool, the release of the Fit bundle makes sense. There have been reports of elderly communities, mothers and trainers all using the Wii as a means of exercise motivation. And, truly, the repetitive motions of certain games (e.g., tennis) give muscles enough of a workout that many people experience soreness the next day. Though Nintendo has been reluctant to refer to the Wii as a fitness solution, the company is certainly aware of the system’s adoption into American fitness culture. While health-conscious groups have complained for years about how video games make kids lazy, Nintendo (whether intentionally or unintentionally) has managed to bridge the gap between the gaming and fitness communities. By capitalizing on that crossover appeal with the Fit bundle, sales of the Wii system could be propelled even further out of the stratosphere.

The Wii Fit Bundle will be available in stores on May 19th with a retail price of $89.99 (though, if it’s anything like the Wii system, don’t expect it to stay on shelves for long).
